Insightful, Sensitive Writing, and Striking Photography
James Beard Award winner Andrea Fazzari has written, photographed and co-designed Tokyo New Wave exploring the changing landscape Tokyo’s culinary world, where a young and charismatic generation is redefining what it means to be a chef. Open to the world and its influences, these chefs have traveled more than their predecessors, have lived abroad, speak other languages, and embrace social media. Yet they still remain distinctly Japanese, influenced by a style, tradition, and terroir to which they are inextricably linked. This combination of the old and the new is on display in Tokyo New Wave, a transporting collection of Andrea’s personal stories and portraits that capture this moment in Japanese food culture for a global audience.
Andrea Fazzari is a Tokyo-based James Beard Award-winning international photographer, author, chef whisper, and designer specializing in travel and the culinary world. She is the author, photographer, and co-designer of her book Tokyo New Wave: 31 Chefs Defining Japan’s Next Generation (Ten Speed Press). This unique 304 page book is Andrea’s love letter to Japan and its distinct philosophy and approach to the culinary arts. It includes 435 of her James Beard Award winning photographs, essays, interviews, and chef recipes. Fazzari’s newest solo book is SUSHI SHOKUNIN: JAPAN’S CULINARY MASTERS (Assouline), released in September 2020. A highly personal and unique monograph, it delves into the private worlds of twenty of Japan’s most acclaimed sushi artisans and their spiritual devotion to craft. Through her photography and extensive writing, you will discover her reverence for this dedication to a singular purpose – ikigai – and the beauty inherent in their culinary artistry. Rich philosophy, masterful skill, and affecting humanity will all be revealed.
